It all started here:

Oh, wait...not exactly True. I think it all started here:

We went to lunch at Empire Brewing Company in Armory Square, downtown Syracuse, NY. Besides having the best, most *chill* waiter ever (PETE!!), I had the best f*cking sandwich ever. Hot pastrami with caramelized onions and melted swiss on a pretzel roll. OH.MY.GAWD!!!
I could *not* stop thinking about that sandwich, and luckily, it seemed it was stuck in Sam's brain, too. He had the jambalaya, and so he was wanting that sandwich.
Sam suggested we go somewhere to buy pretzel rolls to make the sandwich ourselves. Well, the closest place that sells pretzel rolls is an hour away, and they aren't as good as the one at the brewpub. And driving 2 hours round-trip for pretzel rolls makes for a very expensive sandwich.
And then (sound-effect machine, please) DING!! An idea. I remembered I had picked up a pretzel kit from Auntie Annie's the last time we were in Albany. I told Sam it was in the cupboard, and that we could make rolls from it.
And so we did. Or *I* did.

While the rolls cooled, we DID get in the car to go to town and get some pastrami and cheese and onions (yes, we USUALLY have cheese and onions, but our larder was low!...we *did* have some stoneground mustard, and that was uh.muh.guh. fantastic on it...).
And we came home and re-created the best sammo EVER.

We have had them again since then, and plan on having them quite often. I'm drooling again just thinking about it.
EnJOY.
